Free Blood Pressure Screening at Local Gatherings

On any given Thursday morning you can hear the sounds of laughter and lively conversation at the Scandinavia Village Hall during the weekly coffee klatch. It’s where local residents gather to catch up on the week’s events and enter into a wide range of discussion with other community members over coffee and generally a selection of sweet treats.

Now, thanks to Iola Living Assistance, attendees can check one more thing off their monthly to do list by making sure they attend the first Thursday of the month. That is the gathering where staff members of Iola Living Assistance attend to offer free blood pressure screenings. Each person who participates is given a blood pressure record card so they can keep track of their monthly results. The record is meant to be an easy way for an individual to identify changes which may be a cause of concern from which they can determine if there is a need to consult their doctor.
Iola Living Assistance also offers the blood pressure screening service to residents of Manawa on the 3rd Monday of each month at the Meals on Wheels site.
Admissions Coordinator, Jennifer Schwirtz said this is a wonderful way for community members and Iola Living Assistance Staff to get to know each other. “It’s great to be able to meet, and put names with, so many familiar faces from the community,” said Schwirtz.
